Rare Quart-Sized Stoneware Jug, Incised "Jesse Vestal / 1881," Washington County, VA origin, 1881, ovoid jug with footed base and strap handle, incised around the body with the name, "Jesse Vestal," followed by the underscored date, "1881." Desirable size and maker. A much larger jug with incised poem, also signed by Jesse Vestal, ranks among the most outstanding stoneware objects from Southwestern Virginia. Provenance: From a recently-surfaced collection. Excellent condition with small base chip, a minor in-the-making dent to base, and some residue from use to surface. H 7".
