Very Rare Half-Gallon Stoneware Pitcher, Impressed "PAUL.CUSHMAN.S:STONE-WARE.FACTORY.1809 / HALF.A.MILE.WEST.OF.ALBANY.GOAL.," Albany, NY, circa 1809, thin-walled, ovoid-bodied pitcher with footed base, and short, flaring collar, featuring Paul Cushman's elaborate 1809 maker's mark, incorporating the words, "ALBANY GOAL," referring to "Albany Jail," coggled across the midsection. Surface dipped in streaky Albany slip and covered in a light salt glaze. One of a few signed Paul Cushman stoneware pitchers known, this example is noteworthy in its rare small size, refined potting with unusually-shaped collar, and use of Cushman's prized "ALBANY GOAL" mark. Among the finest pieces (as well as the first signed pitcher) from this important early New York State pottery that we have ever offered. Excellent condition with a tiny chip to outer edge of spout and a tiny base chip. H 8 1/2".
