Rare Four-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Peacock Decoration, Stamped "COWDEN & WILCOX / HARRISBURG, PA," circa 1865, ovoid jar with tooled shoulder, flattened rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with a slip-trailed design of a peacock with spotted tail, perched on a branch. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark, capacity mark, and handle terminals. A 7 1/2" inverted Y-shaped crack from rim on reverse. A 2 1/2" horizontal Y-shaped line to reverse, not visible on interior. Light staining to surface. A small chip to each handle. A small chip to interior of rim. Wear to interior. H 13".
