Outstanding Five-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Bird-on-Branch Decoration, Stamped "COWDEN & WILCOX / HARRISBURG, PA," circa 1865, ovoid jar with tooled shoulder, semi-squared rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with a brushed design of a bird atop an unusual rendering of a tree branch. Inscribed "5" beside maker's mark. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark and handle terminals. Desirable large size, strong decoration, and exceptional color. Cracks on underside, extending onto base area. Two hairlines from rim on front, measuring 3 3/4" and 3 1/2". A 2" surface line above bird, not visible on interior. Some staining to surface. A small filled chip to one handle and two small filled chips to opposite handle. Some flakes to interior. H 14 1/4".
