Outstanding Five-Gallon Alkaline-Glazed Double-Handled Stoneware Jug with Profuse Kaolin Slip Decoration, Inscribed "C. Rhodes / Maker," Collin Rhodes Pottery, Edgefield District, SC, circa 1850, highly-ovoid jug with tooled spout and two open handles applied at the shoulder, decorated on the front with the kaolin-slip inscription, "C. Rhodes / Maker," underscored by a large slip-trailed foliate motif with looping stem at the center. Reverse decorated with a kaolin-slip flowering plant motif featuring wreath-like leaves and a central blossom bearing the number "5" for five gallons. Additionally incised with five vertical slash marks at shoulder on reverse. Featuring an exceptional double-handled form and lavish two-sided slip decoration, this jug is among the finest examples of Collin Rhodes stoneware that we have offered. Provenance: A South Carolina private collection. Full restoration to spout. Otherwise excellent, essentially as-made condition. H 15 1/2".
