Outstanding Nine-Gallon Alkaline-Glazed Stoneware Jar with Kaolin Slip Decoration, Stamped "CHANDLER MAKER," Thomas Chandler, Edgefield District, SC, circa 1850, highly-ovoid form with flared collar and large tab handles, the surface covered in a gray-green alkaline glaze with dramatic, thick runs on the front. Slip-trailed on the front and reverse shoulder with kaolin-slip drape and looping line motifs. Further decorated under each handle with looping lines. An imposing jar with wonderful presence, which exemplifies Chandler's potting abilities in its size, form, and thin-walled construction. Provenance: A South Carolina private collection. Small chips to one handle. A small chip to opposite handle. A 1" rim chip. A 1" spot of in-the-firing iron residue to front. A minor chip and minor wear to recessed inner rim. H 19".
