Rare Five-Gallon Double-Handled Stoneware Jug with Alkaline Glaze, Impressed "M," attributed to Robert Mathis, Pottersville, Edgefield District, SC, circa 1835, ovoid jug with semi-rounded spout and open handles, covered in a gray-green alkaline glaze over a brown ground. Impressed below the spout with the letter, "M," possibly for Robert Mathis, while working at Pottersville, prior to his involvement with Phoenix Factory. Five impressed vertical slashes, denoting five gallons, appear above this initial. Exceptional form, scarce maker's stamp, and very nice condition. Provenance: A South Carolina private collection. A 4" crack on underside, extending up side of jug and curving approximately 5" onto front of jug at shoulder. Minor chipping to base. H 18".
