Monumental Five-Gallon Stoneware Jug Cooler with Large Cobalt Grapes Decoration, Stamped "COWDEN & WILCOX / HARRISBURG," PA origin, circa 1870, ovoid jug-form with semi-rounded spout, applied handle, and circular bunghole, decorated with a large brushed design of a cluster of eight grapes hanging from a leafy vine, flanked by corkscrewing tendrils. Cobalt highlights to outer edge and front of bunghole. Additional cobalt highlights to maker's mark and handle terminals. This work is the only jug-form cooler produced at the Cowden & Wilcox pottery that we have seen. The unusual form and grapes decoration suggest it was made to be used as a wine cooler, with a cork closure for the spout reducing oxidization of the wine. It is also the largest jug-shaped vessel from this pottery that we have seen, measuring five gallons or slightly more. An outstanding and possibly unique work by Central Pennsylvania's most famous pottery. Very nice condition with some fry to cobalt and a 5" diagonal hairline at base on side of cooler, possibly in-the-making. H 19".
