Extremely Rare Four-Gallon Stoneware Water Cooler with Philadelphia, PA Advertising, attributed to Richard C. Remmey, Philadelphia, PA, circa 1870, cylindrical form with footed base, squared rim, extruded lug handles, and circular bunghole, the front decorated with two brushed tulip plants flanking the impressed and cobalt-accented advertising, "JOHN C. HOPKINS. / No. 612 MARKET ST. / PHILADELPHIA." Freehand swag decoration above. Heavy cobalt highlight to bunghole. Diagonal tulip motifs to shoulder on reverse. Cobalt highlights to handle terminals and freehand dashes below each handle. This cooler is the first Remmey example of the form that we have seen featuring local advertising. Rim chips. Heavy chipping to right handle. A small chip to left handle. Some fry to cobalt. H 14".
