Very Rare Stoneware Pig Flask with Incised Inscription, attributed to Henry Thomas, Louisville, KY, circa 1875, molded flask in the form of a pig with anatomically-correct underside, incised details to face and hooves, and spout in rear. Incised on one side "a good thing in its place / old Rye in a hogs-." Underside incised "Lard Oil Drill." Surface covered in a dark-brown Albany slip glaze with trace of salt glaze to rear. Produced in both stoneware and yellowware, Thomas's pig flasks are strongly influenced by the work of the Kirkpatrick brothers of Anna, Illinois, but significantly rarer. In-the-firing loss to majority of tail. A small chip to one ear and tiny nick to opposite ear. Minor wear to nose. Minor in-the-firing contact marks to top of pig. L 8 1/2".
