Fine Three-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Incised Bird-on-Branch Motif, Stamped "I. SEYMOUR / TROY FACTORY," NY State origin, circa 1830, highly-ovoid jug with tooled spout, the front decorated with an incised and cobalt-accented design of a bird perched on a leafy branch. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark and capacity mark. The bird motif on this particular jug is the most elaborate that we have offered in the work of Israel Seymour, featuring small incised feathering throughout the figure's entire body. In addition, while most Seymour incised birds include a simple leaf design below the figure, this work depicts the bird atop a large and well-detailed branch, closely-related to the early Utica, New York style. Excellent, essentially as-made condition. H 16 1/4".
