Extremely Rare Alkaline-Glazed Stoneware Weeping Face Vase, Stamped "B.B. CRAIG / VALE, N.C.," circa 1975, ovoid form with flared base and rim, the front decorated with a hand-modeled and applied clay face including eyelids with unusual and desirable "weeping" eyes, singular brow, nose with pierced nostrils, large ears, elongated goatee, and smiling mouth with incised mustache and applied broken china teeth. Surface covered in a mottled green alkaline glaze with glass runs to mouth and sides of face. Underside impressed with Burlon Craig maker's mark. This work is the first face vase by Craig that we have ever offered, as well as the first featuring weeping eyes. Among the finest examples of this influential 20th century potter's work that we have offered. Provenance: Recently surfaced in Georgia. Excellent, essentially as-made condition. H 11 3/4".
