Extremely Rare One-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Leaping Rabbit Decoration, Stamped "LYONS," Thompson Harrington, Lyons, NY, circa 1860, cylindrical jar with tooled shoulder, applied lug handles, and flared rim, decorated with an artistic slip-trailed design of a rabbit with heavily-spotted body, shaded ears, and whiskers, leaping above a stylized, swag-decorated ground between two shrubs. Slip-trailed "1" above. Cobalt highlight to maker's mark. Outside of the stylized leaping rabbit motifs of Julius Norton, relatively few American stoneware designs depicting this popular animal are known. This jar features perhaps the finest rendering of a rabbit on any piece that we have offered, drawing some inspiration from Harrington's earlier tenure in Rochester. Provenance: Sotheby's, Important Americana, January 19, 2003, Lot 682. Very nice condition with a 2 1/2" in-the-firing flake along bottom edge on front and two small rim chips. H 8 7/8".
