Extremely Rare One-Gallon New Jersey Stoneware Jug with Cobalt Letter "K," possibly Kemple Pottery, Ringoes, NJ, 18th or early 19th century, highly ovoid jug with rounded foot, dramatically-tooled spout with rounded rim, and applied strap handle. Decorated with a slip-trailed letter "K" in cobalt script, along with cobalt brushwork at the handle terminals, all applied over a light gray clay body. The style of the jug suggests an early New Jersey origin and the intriguing script "K" with curled ends may be a form of signature by one of the members of the Kemple family of 18th century potters. The style of spout, however, suggests a later date. An example of early New Jersey stoneware. Heavy chipping to base. In-the-firing 1 3/4" separation to underside.
