Scarce Two-Gallon Stoneware Crock with Cobalt Reclining Deer Scene, Stamped "J. & E. NORTON, / BENNINGTON VT," circa 1855, cylindrical crock with tooled shoulder, flattened rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with a large slip-trailed design of a deer with turned head and spotted body, reclining atop a hill, flanked by shrubs. Three fences surround the deer and a pine tree appears in the background. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark. This decoration features crisp slip-trailing, strong color, and excellent coverage over the crock's front. The inclusion of a third fence beside the deer is unusual. Scattered exfoliation to surface and underside, most prominent on the left side and reverse of the crock. A wide inverted Y-shaped crack from rim on reverse, extending onto left side of crock. A 3 1/4" Y-shaped line to reverse, not visible on interior. A short hairline along edge of right handle. Rim chips. A 1 5/8" flake to edge of right handle.
