Rare and Fine Four-Gallon Stoneware Cake Crock with Cobalt Bird-in-Wreath Decoration, Stamped "COWDEN & WILCOX / HARRISBURG, PA," circa 1865, cylindrical crock with tooled shoulder, semi-rounded rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with a bird featuring a spotted and striped wing and raised feet, perched inside a boldly-brushed wreath. Brushed "4" to shoulder. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark and capacity mark. Outstanding figural decoration with crisp brushwork, excellent color, and rare form. A thin 6" crack from rim on right side of crock. A 5 1/4" hairline to right of decoration, extending approximately 4 1/2" onto underside. A 1 3/8" line to rim on far left side of crock's front. A 6" hairline from rim on reverse. A very faint, approximately 3" curved surface line at base on reverse, not visible on interior. A chip to interior of rim. A minor chip to exterior of rim on reverse. Two tiny chips to exterior of rim. Interior of rim with a shallow 5/8" flake and two minor nicks. Some light areas of fry to cobalt. Some light staining.
