Extremely Rare Cobalt-Decorated Stoneware Spaniel, Inscribed "W. T G," William T. Good at the F.H. Cowden Pottery, Harrisburg, PA, circa 1880, molded figure of a seated spaniel on oblong base, decorated with cobalt splotches throughout and highlights to the face, paws, collar, and locket, the base inscribed "W. T G" in cobalt. A highly unusual form from this region. Any of Good's spaniels produced at the Cowden pottery are considered rare, and, when found, this form is typically found with an Albany slip glaze and impressed initials. The salt-over-cobalt glaze treatment on this spaniel is not only more attractive, but also significantly rarer. Literature: For a related Albany-slip-glazed spaniel and cobalt-decorated miniature spittoon, both bearing Good's initials, see Matthew R . Miller, Decorated Stoneware of Cowden, p. 154. Excellent condition with small base chips and some fry to cobalt. H 7 3/4".
