Phenomenal Redware Vase with Vibrant Copper Glaze, Stamped "JOHN BELL," Waynesboro, PA, circa 1850-1880, narrow-bodied vase with semi-ovoid base and dramatically-flared collar, covered in a black glaze with overlying opaque, bright-green lead-and-copper glaze. Variations in the shades of the green glaze, from a creamy color to emerald hues, add to the beauty and sophistication of this work. Interior coated in a clear glaze over an orange-colored ground. The vase's underlying black glaze is visible on the underside, where the piece is marked. Both modern in glaze treatment and form, this vase is likely Bell's response to the rising American Art Pottery Movement. The idea that this work was made by a country utilitarian potter and not an academically-trained artist is evidence of Bell's genius. Very minor wear and a small restored chip at rim. H 8 7/8".
