Extremely Rare Stoneware Bowl with Cobalt Bird-and-Floral Decoration, attributed to James H. Miller, Brandenburg, KY, circa 1860, tapered bowl with tooled shoulder, pronounced rim, and extruded strap handles, decorated with a large brushed design of a bird perched on a flowering branch. Additional floral motif above bird. The bird features delicate application, which includes open, undecorated areas delineating the wing, throat, eye, and beak. Rare in its form and handle construction, this work is one of only a few examples of bird-decorated stoneware known from the Kentucky period of James Miller, a potter who previously worked at the family enterprise in Strasburg, Virginia. Very nice condition with a few shallow rim chips. H 7" ; Diam. 8 3/4".
