Scarce Three-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Impressed Fish and Two-Color-Slip Decoration, attributed to Frederick Carpenter, Boston, MA, late 18th century, ovoid jar with heavily-tooled shoulder, footed base, open loop handles, and rim formed to hold a lid. Decorated on the front and reverse with an impressed and cobalt-highlighted design of a fish. Base with dipped iron slip decoration. Interior coated in heavy iron slip. Impressed below the rim and on top of the rim with a three-gallon capacity mark found on impressed "BOSTON" stoneware made by Carpenter. Excellent form with desirable figural decoration, Provenance: From a forty-year private collection. A large in-the-firing iron ping to one handle, which is partially glazed over. A few other typical, minor in-the-firing pings to surface. A thin 3" crack from rim on front. A thin 8" crack ascending from base below one handle. A few additional short, minor lines to base. A 3" Y-shaped surface line to reverse, not visible on interior. A chip and minor nick to inner rim for lid.
