Unusual Three-Gallon Lidded Stoneware Jar with Cobalt Grapes Decoration and Inverted Maker's Mark, Stamped "COWDEN & WILCOX / HARRISBURG, PA," circa 1865, cylindrical jar with tooled shoulder, flared collar, and applied lug handles, decorated with a brushed design of a cluster of grapes hanging from a stem with looping vines and large, detailed leaf. The maker's mark on this example is impressed upside-down. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark, capacity mark, and handle terminals. Includes original stoneware lid, impressed with the same three-gallon capacity mark as that seen on the jar. Jar with a 1" reglued piece to rim, a shallow 5/8" chip to rim on reverse (which is glazed over), and a shallow 1" chip to interior of rim. Additionally, tiny nicks and expected wear to inner rim for lid, two small in-the-firing iron pings to reverse, and some relatively minor drips of staining from use. Lid with three chips to edge.
