Fine Four-Gallon Stoneware Jug with Elaborate Cobalt Floral Decoration, Stamped "M & T MILLER / NEWPORT, PA," circa 1870, ovoid jug with semi-squared spout, profusely-decorated with a brushed design of a flowering tulip plant bearing three large blossoms interspersed with large, plume-like groups of leaves. Cobalt highlights to handle terminals. Impressive size to the jug and coverage of decoration across the vessel's front, typifying the Miller brothers' extravagant use of cobalt in their best work. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market example, from an old New Jersey collection. Very nice condition with a 1 3/4" in-the-firing contact mark to front edge of spout, a 7/8" in-the-firing contact mark to handle, a few chips to bottom edge of jug, some surface wear to jug, and a small area of fry to top of decoration. Excellent condition with a small spout chip and a few minor base chips. H 16 3/4".
