Outstanding Six-Gallon Alkaline-Glazed Stoneware Jar with Rutile Decoration, Incised "Lm / Feb 2. 1852," Dave at Lewis Miles' Stony Bluff Manufactory, Horse Creek Valley, Edgefield District, SC, 1852, rotund form with semi-rounded rim and arched lug handles, decorated with an olive-green alkaline glaze featuring streaks of white-and-blue rutile to the shoulder and handles. Reverse includes dramatic whitish alkaline glaze runs to the base area. Incised on the front with the date, "Feb 2. 1852," and on the reverse with the initials, "Lm," beside Dave's distinctive horseshoe and six punctates, denoting six gallons. Dave's fingerprints are visible at the base. Featuring an impressive, spherical form and unusual placement of the date and initials on opposing sides, this jar is one of a small number of Dave pieces known with rutile (titanium dioxide) decoration. Provenance: Previously discovered underneath a house in Georgia. Very nice condition with a 1 1/2" chip to one handle, a minor chip to opposite handle, and a minor in-the-firing ping to shoulder.
