Exceedingly Rare Four-Gallon Double-Handled Stoneware Jug with Cobalt Decoration, Stenciled "MILLERS POTTERY. / P.O. / RACOON, / W.VA.," circa 1875, cylindrical, wide-mouthed jug with two applied handles at the shoulder, decorated with a folky brushed design of a plant emanating from a stylized ground. Stenciled below with the arched maker's mark, "MILLERS POTTERY. / P.O. / RACOON, / W.VA." Stenciled "4" at base, underscored with four horizontally-brushed dashes. Exceptional form and appealing brushwork, featuring one of West Virginia's most elusive maker's marks. Little is known about the Millers' operation, although an O.B. Miller worked as a general manager of a grange store between Racoon and Kingwood, West Virginia. This jug is the first example bearing this stenciling that we have ever offered. Left handle broken into three pieces and reglued. An in-the-firing contact mark above a recessed area on front. A recent black marker inscription on underside. H 17 1/4".
