Very Rare One-Gallon Stoneware Jug with Cobalt People Decoration, attributed to the Thompson Pottery, Morgantown, WV origin, circa 1860, cylindrical form with rounded shoulder, unusual wide mouth, and ribbed handle, decorated on one side with a brushed design of three women standing on a stylized ground. The two outer women holding triangular objects in their raised hands, possibly representing small flags or handkerchiefs. Opposite side decorated with four-pointed star motif. A fine example of WV stoneware, featuring iconic regional figural decoration and rare form. A 2 3/4" flaked section along edge of handle. Some smooth, shallow chipping to interior of rim. A 1 1/2" x 1 1/4" shallow flake to underside. A few other minor base chips. Some surface wear to figural-decorated side of jug. H 11 1/4".
