Extremely Rare and Important Vertical-Handled Stoneware Sugar Bowl with Cobalt Watchspring and Floral Motif, Manhattan, NY origin, second or third quarter 18th century, small-sized, cylindrical vessel with footed base, ribbed vertical handles, and inset rim, decorated on the front and reverse with a slip-trailed design of a watch spring motif descending into a pair of large fan-shaped flowers. Slip-trailed cobalt band at base. This sugar bowl is the only early American example of the form that we have seen. Its vertical handle application and style of decoration indicate it was made in Manhattan, essentially the cradle of American cobalt-decorated stoneware production, within the city's first several decades of manufacturing this type of pottery. A shallow 5/8" chip to interior of rim. H 3 3/8" ; Diameter 4 7/8".
