Outstanding Six-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Profuse Freehand Cobalt Decoration, Shinnston, WV origin, circa 1875, large-sized, semi-ovoid jar with tooled shoulder, semi-rounded rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with four bands of freehand vining separated by wavy stripes. Stripe decoration to shoulder. Base with freehand "6" flanked by graduated stripes and underscored by a stripe. Cobalt highlights to handle terminals. The distinctive style of vining on this jar verify a Shinnston, West Virginia attribution. With its lavish top-to-bottom brushwork, this jar is, needless to say, among the most heavily-decorated pieces from this potting tradition known. Excellent condition with some minor surface wear and light staining. H 16 1/2".
