Outstanding Four-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Bold Cobalt Stripe Decoration, Greensboro, PA origin, attributed to William Leet Hamilton, circa 1860, cylindrical jar with incised banding to midsection, tooled shoulder, semi-rounded rim, and ribbed lug handles, lavishly-decorated on the front with seven vertically-brushed wavy stripes. An additional horizontal stripe decorates the shoulder and a freehand "4" decorates the base. Cobalt highlights to handle terminals. Aspects of the form, color, and brushwork of the jar indicate it was likely made by the well-known potter, James Hamilton, before he began producing stenciled ware. Very rare vertically-oriented design, striking color, and immaculate condition. The design on this jar carries strong folk art appeal, with a flowing effect reminiscent of cascading water. Excellent condition with only minor wear.
