Extremely Rare One-and-a-Half-Gallon Stoneware Batter Pail with Cobalt Wreath Decoration, Stamped "J.B. LEATHERS / MT. EAGLE, PA," circa 1875, semi-ovoid form with tubular pouring spout, handle at base on reverse, and pierced clay tabs with wood-and-wire bail handle, decorated on the reverse with a series of brushed swags forming a wreath. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark, clay tabs at shoulder, and handle terminals. This work combines one of Central Pennsylvania's rarest and most desirable maker's mark with a scarce and highly-prized form. It is the only batter pail by this potter that we have seen. Leathers' rendition of this iconic form appears taller and more rectilinear than other examples from Central Pennsylvania and New York State, where this form was produced, and features a slightly smaller pouring spout. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market example, which recently surfaced in Pennsylvania. Excellent condition with a chip to interior of rim. H 10 1/4".
