Extremely Rare Stoneware Canning Jar with Freehand Cobalt Apple Decoration, Greensboro, PA origin, circa 1870, tapered jar with rounded "wax sealer" rim, decorated with a brushed design of an apple hanging from a branch with open leaves. Freehand straight and wavy stripe decoration above and below. Greensboro canning jars are typically found with stenciled fruit designs, and examples featuring such motifs brushed by hand are considered highly unusual. This jar is possibly unique and exhibits strong color and good coverage of cobalt across the surface. Out of the hundreds of Western Pennsylvania canning jars that we have offered, this example is considered one of the finest. Chips to inner wax sealer rim. A minor chip to interior of rim. Some minor surface wear. H 8".
