Rare Early Blue-Glazed Stoneware Face Jug, Stamped "B.B. CRAIG / VALE, N.C.", early fourth quarter 20th century, ovoid jug with applied facial features including bulging eyes, incised eyebrows, large ears, Roman nose with pierced nostrils, and smiling mouth with broken china teeth. Surface covered in a blackish alkaline glaze with overlying blue streaks throughout, including blue accents to the teeth. Underside impressed with Burlon B. Craig maker's mark. Exceptional glaze treatment. The incised pupils and lack of eyelids on the face indicate this jug is an early work by Craig. Excellent, essentially as-made condition. H 9 5/8".
