Two-Gallon Stoneware Crock with Cobalt Recumbent Deer Scene, Stamped "J. & E. NORTON / BENNINGTON, VT", circa 1855, cylindrical crock with tooled shoulder, semi-rounded rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with a slip-trailed design of a reclining deer beside a pine tree with split-rail fence in the foreground, along with a hill, pine tree, and split-rail fence in the background. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark and capacity mark. Professional restoration to exfoliation at base, including painted touch-up to bottom of design, involving a small amount of the fence. Some additional minor scattered exfoliation to base on sides and reverse. Some exfoliation to underside. A shallow 1 1/4" flake to right handle. Very minor wear to right handle. Small chips to interior of rim and some minor exfoliation to rim.
