Rare Large-Sized Stoneware Canning Jar with Stenciled Cobalt Pears Decoration, Greensboro, PA origin, circa 1865-1870, tapered jar with tooled shoulder and semi-rounded "wax sealer" rim, decorated with a stenciled design of two pears hanging from a leafy stem, along with freehand straight and wavy stripes above and below. A fine example of a desirable Western Pennsylvania stenciled motif. The size of this canner and inclusion of five stripes into the decoration are unusual and noteworthy details. Excellent, essentially as-made condition with a small in-the-firing surface line on underside, not visible on interior, and some very minor wear to inner wax sealer rim. H 10".
