Exceptional Six-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Profuse Stenciled and Freehand Cobalt Decoration, Stenciled "Hamilton & Jones / GREENSBORO, PA", circa 1870, cylindrical jar with tooled shoulder, semi-rounded rim, and applied lug handles, featuring top-to-bottom stenciled and freehand cobalt designs. Decoration includes stripes and spots below the rim, an undulating flowering vine at the shoulder, bold-faced Hamilton & Jones maker's stenciling at the midsection, separated by wavy and freehand stripes, a row of rare stenciled six-pointed stars below, and a bold-faced stenciled "6" at base, between freehand stripes, flanked by highly unusual striped brushwork to the left and right of the number. Cobalt highlights to handle terminals. Among the most heavily-decorated examples of Western PA stoneware that we have ever offered. Light surface wear. Otherwise excellent, essentially as-made condition with a smooth in-the-firing contact mark to front. H 16 3/4".
