One-Gallon Cobalt-Decorated Stoneware Batter Pail, Stamped "F.H. COWDEN / HARRISBURG," circa 1880, ovoid form with tubular pouring spout, handle at base on reverse, and applied clay ears with wood-and-wire bail handle; decorated on the reverse with a stenciled abstract foliate motif and around the base of the spout with a freehand wreath. Ears and handle terminals are each finely-brushed with two strokes of cobalt resembling tulip blossoms. Includes tin lid. A small chip to shoulder molding on front. A tiny rim chip. A minor in-the-firing contact mark to tip of spout. A small in-the-firing iron ping below one handle, which is glazed over.
