Fine Glazed Stoneware House-Form Tobacco Jar, English origin, Signed and Dated "James Strange / August the 3 / 1867", molded house-form jar with incised details to base and roof-form lid, the lid with applied figure of a bird. Incised on each side of the house with the inscription, "James Strange / August the 3 / 1867". Lid incised on each side with the date, "1867". Jar includes an oblong tamper with applied knob, incised "August / the 3 / 1867" and "Put me / on your / tobaco(sic) and / I will help". Surface covered in a dark-mustard glaze. Some small chips to rim of house, visible when lid is removed. A small base chip. A loss to tail of bird. An in-the-firing contact mark to opposite side of lid. A minor nick to flange on underside of lid. L 5 1/8" ; W 3 3/4" ; H 6 3/4".
