Outstanding Eight-Gallon Stoneware Water Cooler with Cobalt Bird, Butterfly, and Grapes Decorations, Stamped "CHARLESTOWN", Barnabas Edmands, Charlestown, MA origin, circa 1840, large-sized, keg-form cooler with raised banding and circular bunghole, decorated across the midsection with a brushed design of a grapevine flanked by a flying bird and butterfly. Shoulder decorated with brushed leaves flanking the maker's mark. Base with graduated-leaf vining. Heavy cobalt highlights to banding and surrounding bunghole. An incised cross or four-petaled flower appears on the top of the bunghole. Cobalt highlight to maker's mark and capacity mark. Exceptional size, decoration, color, and condition. A fine example of New England stoneware in all respects. Excellent condition with two small base chips on side of cooler, one of which is glazed-over, a small chip to inner edge of rim, a small in-the-firing iron ping to top of rim, and a minor 4" in-the-firing surface line to right side of cooler, not visible on interior. H 18".
