Rare Large-Sized Cobalt-Decorated Stoneware Mug with Applied Figural Motif, attributed to New Ulm, MN, circa 1885, wheel-thrown, cylindrical form with tooled shoulder and tapered rim molding, the front decorated with a molded and applied figure of a woman in classical dress. Body of mug profusely-decorated with individually-impressed geometric motifs. Heavy cobalt highlights throughout under a clear salt glaze. Albany-slip-glazed interior. Exceptional size. and dramatic use of applied and impressed decoration. Very nice condition. A 1 1/2" long U-shaped crack at base on reverse. Two tiny base nicks. A small rim chip with a minor 1/2" Y-shaped surface line extending from it, not visible on interior. H 12".
