Fine Two-Gallon Stoneware Jar with Elaborate Cobalt Decoration, Stenciled "EXCELSIOR WORKS / Isaac Hewitt, Jr. / RICES LANDING, PA.", circa 1875, semi-ovoid jar with combed midsection, tooled shoulder, and tapered rim, the front featuring the large maker's mark, "EXCELSIOR WORKS / Isaac Hewitt, Jr. / RICES LANDING, PA.", stenciled between straight and wavy freehand stripes. Decorated above with a finely-brushed "2" , flanked by curved vines, along with straight and wavy freehand stripes above and below. Incised math problem on underside. An excellent example of this potter's work, with cobalt brushwork and stenciling extending from top to bottom. Provenance: Collection of Lorren Lambert, Staunton, VA. Excellent condition with water glass staining to interior.
