Half-Gallon Lidded Stoneware Butter Crock with Cobalt Floral Decoration, Stamped "JOHN BELL / WAYNESBORO'", PA origin, circa 1850-1880, cylindrical crock with footed base, squared rim, and ribbed lug handles, decorated on the front and reverse with a spotted tulip motif, applied over whitish slip. Brushed cobalt highlights to handle terminals. Includes original lid with brushed tulip designs over whitish slip. Crock impressed on shoulder with John Bell maker's mark. Underside of lid impressed with John Bell maker's mark. Desirable small size. Crock in very nice condition with a Y-shaped line to base area on interior, which is smaller and less visible on front, as well as a short, faint surface line to interior, not visible on exterior. Crock is additionally slightly out-of-round. Lid in excellent condition with a chip to flange on underside. H 4 3/8" ; Diameter (across top of crock) 6 3/4".
