Very Rare Calloway County, Kentucky Stoneware Grave Marker, probably Kentucky origin, early 20th century, cylindrical form with coggled shoulder and acorn-shaped finial accented with incised stippling, the surface covered in a chocolate-brown Albany slip glaze and incised with the inscription "Rettie Farris / Was Borned (sic) / may 4 1874 / Died may 12, 1904.". Rettie Farris was buried in Old Salem Cemetery, in Murray, Calloway County, Kentucky. This grave marker is the first made for a Kentucky resident we have seen. An exceptionally rare American stoneware form. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market example, recently purchased at a yard sale in Missouri. Various in-the-firing surface chips. Two chips to finial. A base chip on reverse. Wear to coggling. H 15".
