Outstanding Cobalt-Decorated Stoneware Presentation Bank, Inscribed "For / Little Emma / A Merry Christmas / and / A happy New Year / 1882" and "Made December / 13th 1882", attributed to Richard C. Remmey, Philadelphia, PA, 1882, large-sized, ovoid bank with footed base and carved vertical slot, featuring the incised and cobalt-highlighted presentation inscription, "For / Little Emma / A Merry Christmas / and / A happy New Year / 1882". Reverse addtionally incised with the cobalt-highlighted inscription "Made December / 13th 1882". Incised and cobalt-highlighted swags surround these inscriptions as well as the bank's vertically-carved coin slot. Brushed cobalt foliate motifs emanate from the base of the slot, extending around the bank's shoulder. An additional plant motif appears above the incised inscription on the reverse. This bank features rare and appealing holiday-related subject matter in its inscription, which is one of the most elaborate we have seen on an American stoneware bank. Restored finial. Otherwise excellent condition. H 7 3/8".
