Rare One Open-Handled Stoneware Jar with Incised Floral Decoration, Stamped "J. REMMEY / MANHATTAN-WELLS / NEW-YORK," early 19th century, ovoid jar with tall collar, tooled shoulder, and open loop handles, impressed on the front with John Remmey, III maker's mark highlighted in cobalt. Decorated on reverse with a large and detailed incised drooping flower design, highlighted in cobalt. Additional heavy cobalt highlights to handle terminals. This example features particularly strong decoration and color for an example of Remmey stoneware from Manhattan. Provenance: Property of a New York State collector. One restored handle. Repaired crack on side, not affecting decoration. Two thin cracks from rim. In-the-making Y-shaped line extending from a stone ping on the front. Base chips. Rim chip. H 9".
