Outstanding Four-Gallon Stoneware Jug with Cobalt Pheasant-with-Banner Decoration, Inscribed "E.D.P. +. Co.," Fort Edward, NY origin, circa 1875, cylindrical jug with tooled spout, decorated with a very large slip-trailed design of a pheasant on stump, holding a banner, inscribed "E.D.P. + Co.". Excellent detail throughout, including stripes to edge of banner, heavy shading to stump, and profuse ground cover below, in the form of shrubs, spots, and curled trails. The size of the decoration is most impressive, measuring approximately 14" tall. The inclusion of a banner advertising a merchant, held within the bird's beak, is highly unusual. Also of note is the jug's exceptional color and condition. This example ranks among the finest pieces with pheasant-on-stump decoration we have ever offered. Provenance: Property of a New York State collector. Excellent, essentially as-made condition with an in-the-firing salt drip to shoulder. H 18".
