Very Rare Five-Gallon Stoneware Churn with Cobalt Standing Deer Scene, Stamped "OTTMAN BRO'S / & CO / FORT EDWARD, NY", circa 1875, ovoid churn with tooled shoulder, semi-rounded rim, and applied lug handles, decorated with a slip-trailed design of a standing stag with turned head, looking toward three flying birds in the distance. Tall shrubs or trees appear to the figure's left and right, along with heavy ground cover below. Cobalt highlights to maker's mark and capacity mark. A striking folk art design, the first of its kind we have seen. Very nice condition. A 4" vertical line from rim on front. A few small chips on interior of rim and typical wear to inner rim where a lid would rest. A minor, glazed-over line from rim on interior reverse, not visible on exterior. H 17 1/2".
