Exceptional Large-Sized Redware Chicken Whistle, Pennsylvania origin, possibly Berks County, circa 1820-1850, wheel-thrown and hand-modeled whistle in the form of a chicken on pedestal base with applied circular eyes and whattle. Head and neck decorated with brilliant green copper-oxide glaze. Body decorated with manganese stripes to base of neck and back, along with manganese daubs to breast and rear. Heavy manganese highlights to wings. Surface covered in a clear lead glaze. Excellent folk art form of impressive size. The striking green glaze on the head and neck suggest this whistle may have been made in Berks County, where this color was popular. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market example, purchased in the Philadelphia area by a relative of the consignor several decades ago. Restored crest. Otherwise excellent, essentially as-made condition. H 5 1/4" ; L 5".
