Very Rare Moravian Redware Bear Bottle, attributed to Rudolph Christ, Salem, NC, circa 1810-1830, molded in the form of a bear standing atop a slain pig on an oval base. Applied tail and ears to bear. Molded details to bear's face and incised paws. This example includes excellent molding and hand-incised detail to the pig, including a curled tail and delicately-incised hair along the spine. Surface covered in a mottled lead-and-manganese glaze with darker coloration to the bear and lighter areas to the base. A difficult-to-find Southern figural form, this example is believed to be the first of its kind to come to auction since our January 30, 2010 sale. Two chips and a minor nick to bottom edge. Typical surface wear. H 6 1/2".
