Exceptional Large-Sized Stoneware Mug with Profuse Cobalt Clover Decoration, Baltimore, MD origin, circa 1875, cylindrical mug with applied handle, the front decorated with a boldly-brushed two-stemmed clover plant between incised and cobalt-highlighted bands. Circular cobalt highlights to handle terminals. Includes original pewter lid with drake foot finial. Few clover-decorated Baltimore mugs are known, and this is the best of its type we have seen. Provenance: A fresh-to-the-market example, from a long-term Northeastern U.S. collection. Excellent condition with a very faint 2" hairline on underside, continuing 1 1/2" up base on right side of mug, possibly in-the-firing. The fact that this mug has survived without a chip or significant crack is noteworthy. H (to top of finial) 10".
