Very Rare Three-Gallon Alkaline-Glazed Stoneware Jar with Impressed Handles, Stamped "IEG," Isaac E. Gay, Buffalo, Kershaw County, SC, circa 1880, ovoid jar with tooled rim and ornamental handles with distinctive impressed embellishments, the surface covered in a glossy alkaline glaze with mottled streaks of olive-green and celadon coloration throughout. Impressed on the shoulder with the initials "IEG" within a circle, the maker's mark of potter, Isaac E. Gay. Reverse with incised "3" at shoulder. Few signed examples of this potter's work are known. Provenance: Recently surfaced in the Chicago, Illinois area. Very nice condition. Chipping to one handle. Wear to rim and a shallow 1" chip to interior of rim. An in-the-firing clay separation in underside, not visible on interior. H 13".
