Exceedingly Rare and Important Three-Gallon Stoneware Jug with Incised Floral Decoration, Stamped "D. WILLIAMS / POUGHKEEPSIE", New York State origin, circa 1815-1820, ovoid jug with heavily-tooled spout, decorated with a large incised and cobalt-highlighted floral motif featuring a fan-shaped blossom. Brushed cobalt highlights to maker's mark and handle terminals, the maker's mark additionally flanked by cobalt dashes. According to George Lukacs' book, Poughkeepsie Potters and the Plague, Durrell Williams established Poughkeepsie's earliest stoneware pottery in 1797 with a partner, James Egbert. He would later purchase the shop of William Carroll during the 1815-1820 time period, establishing his own individually-owned shop. This jug is one of a very few signed examples of Durrell Williams stoneware known. The attractive floral design, closely-related to Manhattan motifs by Thomas Commeraw and David Morgan, reflects Williams's previous employment as a potter in New York City. Excellent condition with a 1 3/8" in-the-firing base chip, which is glazed over, and a minor base nick. H 15 1/2".
